TOTW - Demystifying the Test Center
=================================================================== CPLPCOACH.COM Tip of the Week - March 2008 =================================================================== HOORAY! The CPLP(TM) Knowledge-based Exam Window is Open!
This Tip of the Week (TOTW) is especially for candidates who are scheduled to sit the exam in the upcoming weeks.
Demystifying the Test Center
The Certified Professional in Learning & Performance (CPLP(TM)) Knowledge-based Exam is delivered through computer-based testing.
The American Society for Training & Development Certification Institute (ASTD CI) has an agreement with test vendor Drake KRYTERION to deliver its Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP(TM)) certification examination through the secure KRYTERION test delivery system.
CPLP(TM) candidates sit the exam at any one of the Drake Authorized Testing Centers (DATCs) in the U.S. or Canada.

http://tinyurl.com/2l5ccr
DATCs are often located in computer stores (e.g. CompUSA), training centers (e.g. Micro-TEK), and at academic institutions (e.g. universities and community colleges).
Special Note: Did you know...? CPLP(TM) Candidates from countries outside of North America fly into the U.S. and Canada to sit the exam. After successful completion of the knowledge-based exam, international candidates return home and complete their work product submission from their country of residence.
- Tips for Before Exam Day
Drive to your selected exam facility before exam day. This way you'll know where it is and how to get to it, instead of trying to figure that all out while quelling your nerves on exam day.
- Go inside and check out the facility. This is especially good for folks who are sensitive to the test environment. Go in and take a look around.
- Put together your exam strategy. Practice sitting in an uncomfortable chair in front of your computer monitor for a couple of hours at a time. Get to know your physical, emotional, and mental reactions. How often do you need a break? Record this information and use it to develop your strategy. 150 questions in 150 minutes - will you need a break? how often? what kind of break? just close your eyes? or do you need to get up & walk around?
- Don't stay up all night the night before and cram! Studies show that last minute cramming (and lack of sleep!) are two of the worst things you can do before exam day.
- Get a good night's sleep.
Tips for Exam Day
- Bring a printed copy of your candidate authorization email. This email contains your Test Taker Authorization Code. You will not be able to launch your exam at the test center if you do not have your code.
- Wear comfortable clothes and comfy shoes.
- Eat a little something so you don't get hungry while sitting the exam.
- Leave the big purse and/or bulging briefcase/laptop case at home or in the car. The test centers often don't have space to securely store large items - and you can't bring that stuff into the exam room with you.
Special Note: Did you know...? You cannot bring your wallet or watch into the exam room with you. Nothing in your pockets - not tissues, cell phones, dollar bills, or spare change. It all must be removed prior to entering the exam room. It's you and your ID, plus the scratch paper and pencil the proctor gives you. That's it.
- Arrive at least 20 minutes early. This helps you to get yourself settled in and prevents you from being late. (That's a special note to folks who think like I do - I seem to think that I can get *anywhere* in the universe in 5 minutes of less. That kind of thinking does not often pan out in my favour.) Arriving late can hurt you - if you're more than 15 minutes late, you may forfeit your appointment and be required to pay an additional exam fee.
- Take your time on the exam.
- Don't dwell on questions - answer them as best as you can, or guess. (There's no penalty for guessing.)
- After answering the question, mark questions that you're unsure of, so you can easily circle back to it. But make sure you answer it first, in case you don't have time to circle back!
- Clicking the Submit button at the end of the exam is the longest 60 seconds of your life. It's like that for everybody. Breathe.
You'll know your pass or fail status before you leave the exam facility.
Plan to do something rewarding afterwards. (Me? I'm always a fan of the pedicure...)
Good luck! :-)

=================================================================== CPLP Registry Offered Online by ASTD CI
The ASTD Certification Institute (ASTD CI) has started a CPLP registry - an online listing of CPLP candidates and the CPLP certified.
This registry is voluntary and offers candidates and CPLPs an opportunity to select which information (if any) they choose to have listed.
For example, you can choose to have any or all of the information displayed:
- Main (mailing) and alternative (e.g., business) addresses
- Primary and alternative phone numbers
- Primary and alternative fax numbers
- Primary and alternative email addresses
Follow these steps to opt-in and get listed:
- Go to http://www.cplp.astd.org and select CPLP Application.
- Click on the registration login link, and use your ASTD login to access your personal certification record.
- Your first time through, click the Verification button at the bottom of the screen (you'll have an opportunity to revise your information afterwards).
- Your Personal Information page reloads. Select My Summary.
- Select Update to make revisions to your information and/or opt-in to publicly displaying your information.
- Select which fields of information to publicize. Beside the fields, you can check "Visible in the Public Registry" if you'd like to include this information in your listing. You can choose all available fields - or just one or two - the choice is yours!
- Select Yes from the drop-down to be added to the Public Registry.
- Click Submit.
